Home / Skiing Torrey's Peak with Rick 16

June 2009Rick and I finished the ski season on June 21st with a hike up Torrey’s Peak (14,267’ – Rick’s first fourteener) followed by a ski descent of the northwest face, a.k.a. the “Tuning Fork” or the “Big Ol’ Strip o’ Snow”. This is one of the longest ski descents in the state – over 2,500’ vertical feet. We started out under overcast skies and intermittent drizzle, and summited in a howling gale, but once we started on the descent we were out of the wind and found ourselves rewarded with fresh powder – on the summer solstice!
